Many universities and institutions have either opened a branch or work together with established Mauritian institutions. Medical and Dental institutes cater for the local as well as foreign demands.
The aim of the Government is to make Mauritius an important centre of learning, given its strategic position in the Indian Ocean.
The Government of Mauritius has declared 2004 the Year of Tertiary Education. The number of students following tertiary level courses has increased from 14,300 in 2000 to 17,200 in 2003. 9500 of these were in State funded institutions.
